Pies

It went something like this:

"What are you getting man?"
"Dunno. A sandwich I guess."
"You had a pie?"
"No."
"You should try the pies. They're good."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"But, it's what? Pie, with meat right."
"Yeah that's right. They're good. You don't have pies in Canada."
"Not with meat we don't."
"Have a pie."
"I don't know, we do fruit. Its a desert thing."
"This is gonna blow everything you thought you knew about pies. Everything. Right outta the water."
"OK what you got there?"
"Butter chicken."
"Butter chicken pie?"
"That's right. Its good. You should try one. Try mince. Beef. Its all good."
"I think I'm gonna try the pie."
"Not only that, you're gonna love the pie."
"I'm gettin' the pie. Screw this sandwich. I'm getting the pie."
"Awesome. Top it off with sauce, you're smoking."
"You put sauce on your pies?"
"Yeah, its good."
"Like Ketchup?"
"Yeah. Like Tomato sauce. Tomato sauce on a pie. You'll love it."
"OK. I'm doin' it. I'm doin' it."
"All right."

And thus began my love affair with the New Zealand pie. I have to admit also that there is a direct and important connection between traveling in a country and discovering its token, cheap food:
In India it was a 2 rupee glass of Chai and these Parle G cookies.
In China it was the 2 quai noodle.
Here in New Zealand, I found it, the $3 meat pie. I've been averaging two pies a day, which has caused some alarm amongst my kiwi friends who have seen more than one person go astray on a pie fetish.

"E's ad a few too many pyes, if ya know wutimean."

But I stand by my pies. Venison, steak and cheese, or hell, veggie if that's your thing. Go extreme with Mince or butterchicken or something exotic, it doesn't really matter because it tastes great and I've got a metabolic rate to hack it. I won't be sprouting and "muffintops" here (think fat chick in lululemon pants and this bit o slang will make sense.)

Thanks NZ. Thanks for the pies.

Love you man. Lola & I just polished off most of a pumpkin pie ourselves - on sale right now 2/$5.

Pie is the food of the (r)evolution, duck tape is the adhesive and gum-boots are the footwear.

ah... the pies. I loved those NZ meat pies. I was on a constant diet of them before heading back to Canada. I wanted some insulation on me before spending the spring in the Yukon. I believe the best pies were made in Roxborough. Mike's or Jim's i forget the name. You could even get them at the gas stations.

anyhow, love checking your sight every couple of weeks. Glad you found yourself in a good climbing scene.

Love it Michael! I remember that conversation and you weren't too sure of this meat in a pie concept, it was brilliant.. Get into it hehe Good to hear that the pies have taken over as much of your time as it did of mine and Al's!

(What about that carrot cake!)

Kerryn,

I HAD forgotten about that carrot cake, but I'm keen to go buy some right now, as you've mentioned it. FYI I've leveled out my pie consumption after a friend's intervention... I had had 4 in one day on the way to PHAT 07, and two had been stale $1 pies both of which I couldn't identify as being sub standard. Regardless, thanks for the tent, I've been the envy of several people at Paynes Ford and my one man tent has been demoted to a food storage facility.

4 in one day is a tad over the top! Although they ARE good pies : )
Good to hear the tent's holding up! Paynes ford is a world of it's own, run's on it's own time! How was PHAT 07? Will you be venturing to Aus?

Stay safe, Climb lots, and eat more pies!
